Pissouri Village & Bay

Pissouri sits on a hillside roughly 30 km west of Limassol and a similar distance east of Paphos, with views that stretch from the Troodos foothills down to the Mediterranean. The name is thought to come either from the ancient city of Boosoura mentioned by the historian Strabo, or from the pitch pine resin (pissa) once produced here in the Byzantine and Frankish periods.

The village and its separate bay are two distinct places joined by a short drive: the traditional village around the square and the 1880s stone church of Apostolos Andreas, and the resort area at Pissouri Bay, built up since the 1980s around a Blue Flag beach backed by the dramatic white cliffs of Cape Aspro. Pissouri Bay was once a small medieval port exporting carobs; the old stone warehouses along the shore have since become restaurants and homes.

The surrounding valley is known for “Sultanina” seedless grapes, olives, carob and the local goat’s milk halloumi, “To Pissourkotiko” — still made and sold in the village today.
