The name is thought to come either from the ancient city of Boosoura mentioned by the historian Strabo, or from the pitch pine resin (pissa) once produced here in the Byzantine and Frankish periods.

The village and its separate bay are two distinct places joined by a short drive: the traditional village around the square and the 1880s stone church of Apostolos Andreas, and the resort area at Pissouri Bay, built up since the 1980s around a Blue Flag beach backed by the dramatic white cliffs of Cape Aspro. Pissouri Bay was once a small medieval port exporting carobs; the old stone warehouses along the shore have since become restaurants and homes.

“A hillside village of stone houses and vineyards, three kilometres from a bay beneath the white cliffs of Cape Aspro.”

The surrounding valley is known for “Sultanina” seedless grapes, olives, carob and the local goat’s milk halloumi, “To Pissourkotiko” — still made and sold in the village today.

Getting oriented
Pissouri Village (the square, church and older tavernas) and Pissouri Bay (the beach, resort hotels and waterfront restaurants) are around 3 km apart by road.
